What To Do About Fleas

External parasites live on a cats skin. They not only cause irritation, but sometimes carry other diseases. As you groom your cat, examine its coat for any evidence of parasites.

Fleas are tiny insects that feed on the blood of animals and create mild to severe discomfort. They cause chronic scratching and, if swallowed by a cat, can also transmit tapeworms. Flea bite allergy is the most common allergy affecting cats. It occurs when a cat is exposed to flea saliva as the flea bites. The saliva acts as an allergen and can cause intense itching. Hair loss and skin infections are other signs of flea allergy. Controlling fleas is essential in managing this type of allergy.

Fleas can hatch in a cats bedding, carpets, furniture and outdoor areas. To control fleas, a cats environment as well as the cat must be treated. Keeping the environment flea-free involves dealing with all stages of the flea life cycle. Fleas live on host animals and move readily from cat to cat, man to man, or from man to cat or other animals. Eggs are laid loose in the cat’s coat and generally fall off soon afterwards and are usually hatched in four to seven days. Animals passing through an infested area pick up these newly hatched and developing fleas.

Special attention should be paid to a cats sleeping area. It should be kept clean and the bedding should be washed frequently. In the house, thoroughly vacuum all carpets and crevices, under cushions, rugs and in the corners of upholstered furniture. Discard the vacuum bag because it may harbor fleas. Some flea control in the yard is possible through spraying. Thorough cleaning and vacuuming help, but a professional exterminator may be needed to control heavy infestations. Multiple treatments may be needed to remove fleas from the household environment. Fleas are diagnosed by finding either the parasites themselves or black specks called flea dirt (flea excrement) on a cat’s coat.

Many preparations are available to aid in flea control. A once-a-month tablet for flea control is available through veterinarians. This tablet kills the flea eggs deposited on a cat. Adult fleas can still bite the cat and deposit eggs. Cats can get an allergic reaction from the flea bites as well as tapeworms.

The once-a-month tablet is a preventative. Products to control fleas in the house and yard are also needed in a complete flea control program, especially in the case of moderate to severe infestations. Be certain the label on any product you use states the product is safe for cats and follow label directions. Your veterinarian can also provide advice about products that will be effective in your particular situation.

For This Reason, It Is Smart To Modify The Type Of Flea Medication You Use At Least Annually.

Types of Flea Medication

Together with the hotter weather come those pesky animals that are the bane of dog and pussy-cat owners everywhere : fleas! Irrespective of how rigorously you try to stop fleas on your pet or in your house, you may bring a hitch-hiking flea home on your shoes or clothing from a friend’s house, or the park, or other source. There are many chemical flea control products are available, but by employing these products you are exposing your loved dog or pussy, and your folks, to damaging chemicals that may build up to poisonous levels in the body and affect the central nerve system. There are numerous natural systems of stopping and controlling fleas Step One : Keep Fleas Out Of Your Yard step one in natural flea control starts in your own back yard. Keep the grass mowed short, particularly in shady areas that remain wet and damp. Chemical free and proved safe, the electrical flea brush passes a mild electric current which effectively kills the bug. The present is mild such that your pet won’t feel any pain or agony .

FleasTherefore , it’s very clear that it’s a fact that natural pussy-cat flea treatment are indeed effective, though it requires a while longer and more patience to see thru the method. Run the brush as you would thru the kitty fur, particularly on the neck and tail which are fave haunts of these bugs. At the rate of fifty eggs a day, you’ll come eyeball to eyeball with a full-blown infestation inside a week with the right condition. The fleas life cycle takes one or two days to a year to finish relying on the right condition. Types of Flea Medication

While I admit these chemical treatments are some generations removed from their natural forebears, there isn’t any doubt the undeniable fact that they’re from the same family, it is fairly possible for chemicals derived in the 1st example from plant based compounds to be very efficient. Nonetheless I have to confess that they’re no longer ‘natural ‘ in that most of the people understand them. Garlic is an item which frequently appears as a component in natural flea treatments – yet you’ll find articles that in which vets warn that garlic ( and onion ) have the power to cause anemia in dogs, and that moggies can be far more susceptible So before you discount all modern flea treatments as unpleasant chemicals stop and inspect what is really in them. Curiously you do not have to hunt for long to discover that many folks have attempted so called, natural flea treatments to find that they weren’t as safe as they were hoping. If you faithfully use topical flea drops on your pet, you can have eliminated fleas as a reason for your dog’s scratchy behaviour. The difficulty with flea medicines for dogs is that fleas reproduce quickly and can swiftly mutate to guard themselves from the drugs intended to kill them. Because of that, it is sensible to switch the brand of flea medication you use once or more a year. A single flea bite will lead to a reaction in a sensitive dog. Products meant only to kill adult fleas aren’t acceptable as the goal should always be to stop any fleas from investing your dog.

Infestation of  Fleas

FleasYou might think that fleas are nothing more than a minor irritant, like mosquitoes, but if you’ve ever seen a dog with a severe flea infestation, you’ll think otherwise.

Dogs can develop skin allergies, balding, skin rashes, dermatitis and other conditions including worms if fleas are not controlled. In severe cases, the dog will become restless.

Flea bite allergy is a common condition that causes the dog to scratch incessantly. If the scratching does not provide sufficient relief, the dog will bite at his skin and tear out patches of hair trying to get rid of the itch.

Effects of Fleas

Dogs can become extremely irritated and sensitive to other disturbances, such as a family member attempting to play with the dog or even to pet him. Dogs in distress are likely to bite family members out of frustration.

It’s important, therefore, to make sure that your dog is clear of fleas. This can be difficult if your dog has the run of the yard or goes on frequent trips to the park or is allowed to run free. Fleas are everywhere and are spread by wild animals. Squirrels are a particularly troublesome source as they tend to carry them from nest to ground on a regular basis.

While it’s not feasible to eliminate fleas from your yard, it is relatively easy to rid them from inside your house and from your dog.

There are many products available that will do the trick. You can get flea collars for your pet, use a flea spray or bathe your dog with flea soap. Some products that you give your dog orally will protect your dog for up to a year. If you have multiple pets, treat them all so the fleas have nowhere to hide and cannot be transferred to your treated animals.

Of course, treating the dog isn’t enough. Fleas jump off your dog from time to time and hide in carpets, bedding, and other soft materials. If your dog has his own chair or is allowed on your furniture, the fleas will take refuge there until feeding time. Then, they will seek the closest source of food which includes humans, dogs and other household animals.

To be sure you get rid of as many fleas as possible, take the animal bedding outside and shake it out, then spray it well with a flea repellent. Better yet, wash it if possible. Spray into the carpets and along the baseboards of your rooms, especially those where the dog and any other house pets hang out.

It’s important to maintain monthly spraying during the warm months when fleas proliferate to ensure the best protection for your animals and your family.
